I want to thank several people who were incredibly helpful to me as I worked on this project. First and foremost, my deepest appreciation and gratitude to Micah Bazant for designing this publication.  Others who I’d also like to thank include: the archivists at the California Archives, the librarians at the Bancroft Library, Judy Carson, Leisa Johnson, and Lewis Wallace.  Finally, I am incredibly grateful to my friends and co-organizers of the Black/Inside exhibition, Billy Dee and Teresa Silva.
